After 21 years hauling HHGs I came off the road in 2004, and retired from the whole business in 2009. It was difficult to find drivers even then. Part of the stupidity of the companies and the regulators has to do with pay. I lost $32k off my gross in 1 year, and ran every bit as hard. It’s impossible to pay less for the same or more work, expect longevity, and recruit quality new drivers. One of the deciding factors for me was the use of any excuse to make truckers a revenue source. On top of that were the anti-idling laws, new truck regulations, lack of rest stops, insufficient truck stop locations, and ridiculous hours of service. Together, that was the end. I took a dispatch job for 10k less than what I made on the road, but I was home every night.

I liked doing it, but was glad I got out when I did, and have never regretted it. My wife asked me about if I wanted my epitaph to be “I wish I’d spent more time at work”. Clearly NO.

Many such cases, it seems like there has been a war declared on truckers.

They never listen to the opposition or the facts that what they legislate is not working and they never will.
